Mt. Etna and Flag Tree

Guess the direction of the prevailing wind! Looking southeasterly off the Pacific Crest Trail in California, near the vague northern end of the Sierra Nevada. Mt. Etna has been mapped as a volcanic plug. The name may come from a nostalgic 49er! The Sierra Buttes are peeking out just barely on the left.

Stressed environment! Off the Pacific Crest Trail near Andersen Mountain, at the Sierra Nevada crest south of Donner Pass.

In extreme northern Nevada--the plain in the distance is in Idaho. I thought this was a bristlecone, but I'm not sure. The mountains to the right in the distance are the Jarbidge Mtns, the site of Nevada's first designated wilderness area.

Off the trail near the summit. "Krummholz" means "crooked wood" in German, and is used by botanists to describe the highly stunted and deformed trees around timberline.
