Owens River

Caifornia, USA. Looking west along the Chalk Bluff road to the Sierra Nevada. The bluff is not "chalk" but the Bishop Tuff, an enormous ignimbrite unit erupted from Long Valley Caldera about 600,000 years ago--a geologic eyeblink. The prominent peak on the skyline just to the left of center is Mt. Tom (13,652 ft / 4161 m). This is the unprepossessing little stream that was the object of California's "water wars" in the early 20th century. Los Angeles now owns most of the water rights and the bulk of the river is exported to L.A. Here's the Wikipedia write-up: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Water_Wars
