Yes, these are wild specimens of the native California palm ( Washingtonia filifera ), still hanging on by now-dry Sheep Hole Oasis, near Box Canyon Road in the Orocopia Mtns Wilderness. Vandals think it's great fun to set the dead fronds on fire, which is why the trunks are blackened. At least these trees survived; one in the group in the inset did not.

Abandoned motel outside Barstow, California, on old US 66. I would assume it went defunct when parallel Interstate-15 was built in the early 60s. It's amazing the palm trees, of which there are several besides this one, have survived. For one thing, vandals often think it's great fun to set the dead, untrimmed fronds on fire.
