Mountain mahogany ( Cercocarpus spp.), clinging to a slope above Red Canyon in the Pine Nut Range, western Nevada. A very typical shrub/small tree in the higher elevations in the Great Basin. Sometimes they get tall enough to be almost a tree, as here. Often, though, they make absolutely impenetrable thickets!

Mountain mahogany (I think) improbably perched directly in the granite bedrock. Just off the traverse to Outlaw run, Mt. Rose Ski area, Nevada. Looking northeast; Reno, NV is out in that distant valley.
