Big Pine

Either a Jeffrey or ponderosa pine, but we didn't check the cones! Both species occur in this area. Off the Summit Lake trail near Markleeville, California. The inset shows the scale!

One Very Big Jeffrey pine! (Note my wife at the base for scale--also check the inset for an enlarged version.) One the old-timers missed when they were logging things off; the terrain was just too rugged and remote to bother with at that time. Near Lake Margaret in the Sierra Nevada, California, a couple miles off the Carson Pass highway (SR 88). Yes, we checked that this is a Jeffrey pine ( Pinus jeffreyi ); the barbs at the ends of the segments making up the cones point inward, so you can pick the cones up without sticking yourself. The foresters' mnemonic for distinguishing these trees from the very similar and closely related ponderosa pine is: "You can play catch with Jeff!"

A large Jeffrey pine improbably perched off the Pacific Crest Trail on the flank of the Sierra Buttes. That's about a 45 degree talus slope! Sierra City and the North Fork of the Yuba River are down in that valley below. Sierra Nevada, California, USA.

Survivor!

Just barely--there are still a few living branches, even though much of the trunk is dead and supporting shelf fungus! Off the trail to Lake of the Woods, Sierra Nevada, California.

"You can play catch with Jeff"

Pinus jeffreyi , Jeffrey pine. A stand growing in the foothills of the Carson Range above Washoe Valley, Nevada. The title is a mnemonic we learned from a forester friend for distinguishing Jeffrey pine from the very similar, and closely related, ponderosa pine. The barbs on the Jeffrey's cone point inward, so you can catch the cone without poking yourself. Per Wikipedia, Jeffrey is found under drier conditions than ponderosa pine, which otherwise is faster growing. The glossy green shrub making an understory here and there is manzanita.
