House Rock Rapid

Colorado River, Marble Canyon, Arizona, USA. This is the first big rapid when running the Colorado thru the Grand Canyon. (The other pix of this rapid in my collection are mislabeled as "Soap Creek," which is a smaller rapid upstream.) From one of my USGS trips in the mid-70s.

Somewhere in lower Marble Canyon. We've dropped below the level of the Redwall and are in the Bright Angel Shale. Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA.

Redwall Limestone

Right at the Colorado River's edge in Marble Canyon. Powell named "Marble Canyon" because the water-polished limestone looked like marble.

Navajo Bridge

07 Apr 2011 265
Crossing Marble Canyon below Lee's Ferry on the Colorado River. This is the original bridge that was completed in 1929, already 30 years old in 1959. It bypassed Lee's Ferry a few miles upstream. A new, parallel bridge was (finally!) opened in 1995, at which time the original bridge was restricted to foot traffic. To this day there is no automobile crossing over the Colorado between here and Hoover Dam downstream. (There is a couple of footbridges at Phantom Ranch in the Grand Canyon.)
