Looking west, off the spoil heap in front of the main portal, out the access highway that leads to Gabbs, NV. Gabbs is about 30 miles away, over the next mountain range, and almost a ghost town itself--but it does have a filling station! As late as the mid-90s there was also a gas station and bar in Ione, about 12 miles north--but no more. The on-site ranger lives in a refurbished house down by the office, where the flags are flying. The US national flag flying over Berlin has 45 stars--the number in Berlin's heyday, ca. 1900. (The blue flag below is the Nevada state flag.)
