Interstate-80 is the road on the slope to the left (north) of Donner Lake. The route visible on the slope above the lake to the right is the transcontinental railroad. Seen from the Pacific Crest Trail between the old 40 and I-80 trailheads.

Yes, this is the site where the ill-fated Donner Party wintered over on their way to California: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donner_Party There's now a state park and interpretive center here. The classic account of the Donner Party remains George R. Stewart's _Ordeal by Hunger_. In contemporary accounts the lake is called "Truckee" Lake. Btw, the lake is natural and of glacial origin.
