Road access--sort of--to Emigrant Lake outside Ashland, Oregon. Even with the 4x4 I didn't try to take the car down to the shore!

Dolores River, Colorado, muddy with the monsoon rains. In places the water looked like chocolate milk! The shrub in the foreground is the native willow.

Or "desiccation cracks," more formally. On the dry floor of Stampede Reservoir, California. Altho here they're a result of the drought, at least they're a good example of a common sedimentary phenomenon!

"Playa" is literally "beach" in Spanish, but in the deserts of North America it also means a dry lake bed. Presumably it's a Mexican-Spanish usage imported into English.
