Looking east from the Perimeter Trail above Box Canyon Falls. Ouray is another old mining town in the Colorado Rockies, dating from the late 1800s, that has capitalized on its setting to become a tourist center. It calls itself "Colorado's Switzerland" (!); the elevation of the town itself is 7,792 ft (2375 m), with some of the surrounding peaks over 13K ft.
The spoil apron from the Chief Ouray mine is visible high on the opposite slope. Precious metals (gold & silver) were the focus of the local mining operations. Ouray was a chief of the local Native American tribe, the Utes, who saw the handwriting on the wall and tried to cut the best deal he could for his people.

Original county seat of Nye County; then mostly a ghost town for many years, but now with some new building by those who really Want to Get Away From It All...
Note the pieces of wall downhill from the new white building, on the right side of the photo.

Looking north from a dirt road above town, part of the "Castle Loop" bike trail. The main street across the middle of the picture is US 50/Lincoln Highway. Several years back there was a valiant effort by an entrepeneur to establish Austin as a mountain bike destination. It never quite caught on--just too remote, presumably--and the guy finally gave up and moved his bike shop to Elko, NV. But there is a legacy of lots of named trails.

On Nevada 376 in the Big Smoky Valley. Looking east to the Toquima Range, which is blanketed by a late-season snowfall.

Made out of old railroad ties, a common practice in the desert West decades ago.
