Headframe for one of the old mines on the grounds of the Tonopah Mining Museum. I believe this is the Silver Top, but I'm not completely certain. Like all the mines here, it was primarily a silver producer.

Tonopah, Nevada, USA, now on the grounds of the new and excellent mining museum. The Mizpah was one of the main silver producers in the district. The name looks Paiute ("pah" = "water" in Shoshoni, as in "Tonopah" itself), but evidently it's from the Old Testament. It was named by Belle Butler, wife of the discoverer and co-owner of the mine. Belle was apparently quite the businesswoman, and in a more recent era would no doubt have been one of the mine executives in her own right.

Crown Point Mine, from the parking lot of the Gold Hill Hotel. Gold Hill is next to Virginia City on the Comstock Lode, the massive silver deposit that helped fund the Union side of the American Civil War and led to Nevada's statehood in 1864. There was new activity here in the 1970s with the run-up in precious-metals prices then--the excavation above the headframe is an open pit dating from that time--but it's all protected as a historical site now.

Probably also the Antelope Mine. This shaft would intersect the adit coming in from the east.
