Rome

No, not _that_ Rome! The clump of trees in the distance marks Rome, Oregon, which has a cafe, a gas station, and a convenience store--maybe even a bar. It is famous among whitewater enthusiasts for being the site of the upper put-in point on the Lower Owyhee River (foreground), which flows thru a spectacular desert canyon downstream from here. Rome is on US Highway 95, which crosses the river about a half-mile downstream (inset), and that highway provides the river access.

Looking downstream (north); the bridge is where US 95 crosses. Rome, Oregon, which consists of little more than a gas station, is off the pic to the left. We're at the put-in point for raft trips on the Lower Owyhee. The river enters a spectacular desert canyon at those bluffs ahead. Commercial trips are run in April-May, spring runoff permitting. One of these days-- The Owyhee rises, improbably, in extreme northern Nevada and flows northward to the Snake, joining it just above Nyssa, Idaho. Via a convoluted set of historical circumstances, the name "Owyhee" actually comes from Hawaii (!)..
