From the top of the Oregon City Municipal Elevator, looking toward Willamette Falls (the mist rising from the spray in the distance). The sketches in the foreground are interpretive notes on the window!

From the top of the Oregon City Municipal Elevator. The river is the Willamette (stress the 2nd syllable); the freeway crossing the bridge is Interstate 205. Again, the writing and sketches in the foreground are interpretive notes on the window!

Looking out from the top of the Oregon City Municipal Elevator, thru the large glass windows on the top. The bridge crosses the Willamette River. The drawings and words in the foreground are interpretive notes on the glass! The Portland area is not usually this sunny.

On the eponymous river, seen from the promenade accessed from the Oregon City Municipal Elevator. The low masonry building to the right of the falls is a hydropower plant, first constructed in 1889(!) and still in use. It was the first long-distance generating plant in the US, sending electricity 14 miles (23 km) to Portland. The foreground view isn't the greatest, but apparently there are plans to redevelop the old industrial area as high-quality public riverfront space.
It's wil-AM-et, btw!

On the south edge of Portland, Oregon, looking east. That's the Ross Island Bridge just left of center, which carries US 26. The river is the Willamette. The tram starts just off I-5 and runs up the bluff to the west to the campus of the Oregon Health & Science University. It's open to the public, fare $4.25. Thanks to Don Barrett for this link:

Inserts are (left) the view just to the left, showing Mt. Hood shrouded by clouds; and (b) the tram gondola on the other cable, descending.

Very tame Canada goose in the Willamette River at Wallace Marine Park, West Salem, Oregon. You get the impression maybe people are feeding them-- ;)

Salem, Oregon, across the Willamette River. It was built 1912-1913 and hasn't carried an actual train since the early 1990s. The lift span (flanked by the tall towers) was decommissioned in 1980 by permission of the US Coast Guard, which has jurisdiction over navigable waterways in the US. The Willamette still carried significant river traffic when the bridge was built. In 2008-9, the bridge was converted into a pedestrian/bikeway connecting Wallace Marine Park and Riverfront Park. The bikeway is also passable to emergency vehicles.

A small ferry across the Willamette north of Salem, Oregon. A car costs a buck! The ferry is tethered to a cable that runs across the river.
