Probably a desert bighorn, Ovis canadensis nelsoni . On the road between Empire and Sulphur, Nevada, south of the Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada and a bit east of Trego Hot Springs. This is an unusual occurrence! Maybe this guy is still trying to find a territory. In any case, we were delighted to see him. He'd decided by this point we might be a threat so is moving away.

Sphyrapicus thyroideus . Not the greatest pic of this little woodpecker, but he kept dodging around the tree trunk! The species is native to the conifer forests of western North America. The sexual dimorphism is so extreme that the male and female were originally described as separate species! Off the trail to Emigrant Lake, Sierra Nevada, California.

Mule deer bucks chowing down on alfalfa in a local field. Washoe Valley, Nevada, USA. Evidently deer aren't at risk for bloat the way cattle are.
