In the old days, trails were often marked by chopping off a section of bark to show the light wood underneath, a "blaze." The practice dates back at least to pioneer times, and maybe even was used by Native Americans. Of course, the blaze injures the tree, and so blazing is considered Politically Incorrect these days. The US Forest Service quit doing it in 1960. You still often see blazes on old trees along trails, tho, as here. This is the Charity Valley trail in the Sierra Nevada, California.

Early season snowfall in the Sierra Nevada, California! This trail cuts over Meiss Ridge from the Pacific Crest Trail to Schneider Cow Camp.

More fully, the Fremont National Recreation Trail. Maybe a mile up the trail east of the trailhead on the Chewaucan River. The trail is a little-known one, remote from population centers, in south-central Oregon.

In St. Edwards State Park, Washington, in Kirkland on the east side of Lake Washington. There are a number of paths down to the lake from the old seminary.

Which here is an old Jeep road now closed to motorized traffic. It also connects thru to the Tahoe Rim Trail, but we ran out of time even to get to the lake! Lake Tahoe basin, California, USA.

Damage on the Cascade Falls trail due to runoff. It was the 6th strongest rainfall on record at Zion National Park, about 30 miles south. Utah, USA.
