Drizzly

On Sugarloaf Creek inlet, Lake Shasta, California. This inlet had been dry for years--see the satellite view, and note the flooded trees in the water straight ahead. The pine seedlings on the shore in the foreground are also at risk; this bare shoreline is the "bathtub ring" covered by the lake at its highest level. The lake's being drawn down again to make room for the spring runoff. The inset shows some drowning seedlings. Oh, and yes--those are raindrops pittering down on the water surface!

Erosional channel feeding into Washoe Lake. The black object at lower right is a dog!

Hood Canal

Washington state, USA. Despite the name, this is a natural fjord, separating the Olympic (to the left/west) and Kitsap Peninsulas. Evidently when explorer George Vancouver conferred the name in the1790s "canal" did not yet mean strictly a man-made channel. He named several other "canals" as well up in what's now British Columbia. Looking north; map position is approximate. The weather is extraordinarily clear for the area!
