A small cirque lake on the grounds of the Squaw Valley ski resort in the Sierra Nevada, California. The "bathtub rings" on the rocks show how far the water has dropped this late in the season! The inserts show views elsewhere around the lake.

Another cirque lake in the Sierra Nevada, California, right next door to the Kirkwood Ski Resort--but accessed by a 4 mile hike! We tried to go here in June last year but were turned back by a ford that was too deep and swift for comfort! Inset pix show some of the shoreline trees. This is one of those places where you end up with lots of pix where you can't decide which to use! The lake elevation is just under 8600 ft/2621 m.

Leavitt Lake

Cirque lake in California's Sierra Nevada, accessed by a 4wd track off the Sonora Pass highway (CA 108). The Pacific Crest Trail follows the skylined crest on the opposite side. The inset shows the view from the skyline back to the lake; the position of the inset marks the viewpoint location.

In California's Sierra Nevada, another one accessed by a serious 4wd track (the dirt road visible on the far side of the lake). This is off the Pacific Crest Trail, looking pretty much north over the lake from the cliff rimming the cirque. Elevation here is about 10,500 ft (3200 m). Per the USGS topo, the elevation of Leavitt Lake is 9556 ft.

Wheeler Peak

20 Sep 2015 10 10 642
13,063 feet/3982 m. Just to the right of center. High point of the Snake Range and centerpiece of Great Basin National Park, Nevada. Seen from the cirque below the peak on the north side. This cirque is still said to contain a rock glacier, and there is perennial ice below the blocky glacial debris in the middle, but it doesn't appear to be active at this point. The cirque is eroded into Late Precambrian quartzite, which accounts for the layering seen in the cliffs and the blocky nature of the erosional debris. I'm sure the spire on the left has a name, but I haven't been able to track it down (maybe I'll just call the park!)

Angel Lake campground

High in what's technically the East Humboldt Range, but for all intents and purposes the northern Ruby Mountains, Nevada. The lake itself is natural and fills the cirque beyond the campground.

Blue Lake

Another of those generic names... This is in the Pine Forest Range in extreme northwest Nevada. It's actually a natural cirque lake--these mountains were high enough to develop some glaciers in the Pleistocene. As of last year it's now in the Pine Forest Range Wilderness.

Ruby Mountains, Elko County, Nevada, USA. Per the USGS 7.5' topo map the prominent horn peak is Mt. Fitzgerald (11,215 ft/3418 m).
