Coyote on a mission

I was out with my dogs in Washoe Lake State Park, about a mile from the trailhead, and see this coyote coming along the trail where we'd just been. It was a little disconcerting! But he finally noticed us (left inset), and dodged off into the brush (right inset). They're getting a bit tame for comfort--

Canis latrans. Majuba Mountain area, Pershing County, Nevada. This appeared to be a young female. She'd better develop some 'fraidness! The inset is a profile shot.

Mama Coyote

A coyote pair was working the crowd along California State Route 190 at the north end of Panamint Valley, just inside Death Valley National Park. They should be safe so long as they stay inside the park. People on the road were paying no attention to the "don't feed the coyotes" signs! This female is obviously lactating, so there must be a den with whelps not too far away. CA 190 is the main route into Death Valley from the west, so it's mostly tourist traffic.

Washoe Lake & Coyote

Washoe Lake State Park, Nevada, USA. Yes, that's a coyote out there standing in the water! At least the photo shows the context of the place it lives. Looking west to the Carson Range.

Coyote begging

Death Valley National Park, California, USA. Some of the coyotes have learned that if they hang out along the road and look cute, they get handouts! Since this photo was taken, the Park Service has put up signs asking people not to feed the coyotes.

Coyote on the Alvord Desert

This coyote evidently strayed onto the playa and then didn't know where to go. It appeared to be in distress, as it hardly paid attention to us altho it came within a few dozen yards. It was headed for the playa edge on the west side so hopefully found water there.

Lost coyote, Alvord Desert

Another view, still headed to the west side of the playa. I wondered if it was fooled by the mirage? In any case, there are springs on that side of the playa so it should be able to find water.
