Probably a sugar pine. Horsethief Canyon, California.

Old growth

A white fir, I think, but I won't commit to an identification! This is in the upper reaches of Horsethief Canyon, off California State Route 88. Altho this highway has been a thru route for the emigrants since the 19th century, the lower part of the canyon is very steep, and that probably protected this tree and others in the vicinity. There were easier pickings! Horsethief Canyon, in fact, is supposed to get its name from its use as an escape route for--yes--horsethieves. Inset highlights the scale.

Old growth ponderosa (or Jeffrey) pine off the Pacific Crest Trail (seen just to the right of the dog) about a mile or so south of the Henness Pass trailhead, California.

Very large ponderosa (or Jeffrey) pine

Somewhere off the Pacific Crest Trail a mile or so south of the Henness Pass trailhead, California. Inset shows the size of this tree--it's old growth the old-timers missed! I dunno whether it's a Jeffrey or ponderosa because we didn't check the cones. And, btw, I misidentified a red fir as a ponderosa a while back: www.ipernity.com/doc/289859/43263562/in/album/928122 Sorry about that!
