The Pittock Mansion was built by Henry Pittock. He was born in England, but he moved with his family to the USA in 1839. He arrived barefoot and without a cent in Portland in 1853. He got a job as a typesetter at the Oregonian, which he took over and launched as a daily newspaper in 1861. From there his fortune grew and at his death in 1919 his estate was worth around 7 million dollars. In 1909-1914 he built this mansion in the West Hills of Portland. It was nearly demolished in 1962, but nowadays it is a museum.

English translation: "Shampooing 'Sano'. Purifies, keeps and cleans the hair. Instructions for use: Let the the shampoo Sano melt in one litre boiling water (preferably rain water) and forcefully stroke the hair with the foaming water, until the skin of the skull is thoroughly wet with the shampoo. Rinse the hair with clear water and leave to dry. Is used in every season by everybody."
