The building at the back is modern, it houses the Gortyn Code, the law of ancient Gortyn.

The city of Gortys became important in the 1st millenium BC and after the Roman occupation of Crete in 67 BC it became the capital. In 798 AD the city was hit by an earthquake and after the Arab occupation in 828 AD the city suffered further destruction.

Theatre which dates from 161 AD. It was destroyed in 267 AD by the invading Heruli. The theatre was partly restored in 1950.
