Convicted criminals had to stand on a public square with a board of their crime around their neck. This board says: "Vervoering van een meisje beneden de 16 jaren oud" [Abduction of a girl below 16 years old]. De Gevangenpoort is the gate house to the Buitenhof in The Hague, used for years as a prison, now a museum.
