Built in the 6 or 7th century, destroyed by an earthquake in the 8th century. The city of Gortys became important in the 1st millenium BC and after the Roman occupation of Crete in 67 BC it became the capital. In 798 AD the city was hit by an earthquake and after the Arab occupation in 828 AD the city suffered further destruction.
