Peanut paste was first patented by the Canadian Marcellus Gilmore Edson in 1884. The product became very popular in North America and after the Second World War it was introduced into the Netherlands. They could not use the name butter, because that is a protected name, so they use pindakaas (peanut cheese). The name goes back to the Surinam word pienda-kassie or pinda dokoen, a more solid version of peanut butter, which could be sliced. The Netherlands is one of the few European countries where the product is popular. Dutch peanut butter is a bit different from the American versions: a bit more coarse and less sweet. In recent times the varieties have increased and now there is a peanut butter shop in the high street.
