Pier Gerlofs Donia was a Frisian rebel leader who lived from 1480 to 1520. He was known for his size and strength. His sword is 2.15 metres (7 ft) long and it weighs 6.6 kg (14.5 oz).

During the war the national-socialist director of the agricultural school regarded this picture the epithome of a Germanic young man and he hang the portrait in the school, against the wishes of the portrayed. Painted by Bouke van der Sloot.

In the 19th century hundreds of dwelling mounds were levelled, because the soil was fertile. Lots of archeological objects were also dug up. This picture dates from 1880–1890 near Hogebeintum.
