USA 2016 – Antique Powerland – Fuller Roadranger

The diesel engines used in trucks usually have a limited rpm range. In order to drive at different speeds and with heavy loads, you need a lot of gears. In the olden days this was achieved by using two gearboxes and the driver had to operate two gear levers. The Fuller Roadranger had all the gears in one transmission and a lever on the gear lever was used to operate the different ranges. LOW stands for low range, DIR for direct and OD is for overdrive. It was still hard work for the driver, in worst case 18 gears with a non-synchronised gearbox, so a lot of double-clutching to boot.
