It dates from 1720, although the present interior dates from 1858. It has had many illustrious guests over the years, such as Carlo Goldoni, Goethe and Casanova, Lord Byron, Marcel Proust and Charles Dickens.

The three flagpoles symbolise the 3 kingdoms ruled by Venice: Cyprus, Candia and Morea. Candia is present-day Crete, Morea is the Peloponnese. After Napoleon took over, there were plans to tear them down, but then it was decided that they stood for Freedom, Virtue and Equality.
