Spaarndam is a tiny village between Amsterdam and Haarlem and it is located on a dam (as you might have guessed). The Spaarne is a river which flows through Haarlem. When you put the two together, you get Spaarndam, which means, the dam of the Spaarne. This dam protected Haarlem from the tide of the IJ. An utterly charming Dutch village with very expensive houses. The sluice in front is no longer in use.
