Katwijk 2023 – Lighthouse

The building dates from 1605. Originally a fire was lit at the top, from the 19th century an oil lamp. It was a beacon for the fishing vessels of Katwijk. After the fishing vessels of Katwijk didn't land at Katwijk anymore, the lighthouse stopped working in 1912. It survived the building of the Atlantik Wall during the Second World War.

This church in Katwijk dates from around 1460. Named after Andrew the Apostle, patron saint of fishermen. The church is located on the coast. Between 1890 and 1924 it was a shed for a shipping company. The tower used to be higher, but it was damaged in 1836 during a storm. Also in the Second World War the tower was reduced in height by order of the Germans. Between 2009 and 2014 the church was restored, mainly to remove the salt from the structure. Picture from 2012:

The mouth of the Rhine silted up around 1000 AD. Around 1800 the sand was dug away so that water from Holland could be pumped away. The opening is protected with a dam.
