The Maatschappij tot Nut van ‘t Algemeen (Society for Public Welfare) was founded in 1784. They wanted to enlighten en improve individuals and society by education, but later they also founded institutions, such as the bank Nutsspaarbank in 1818. The bank later became part of Fortis and then ABN Amro.

The Maatschappij tot nut van het algemeen (Society for the common good) is a benevolant society established in 1784. It works for the betterment of the people, both individually as well as a community. It did that – amongst other things – by establishing schools, libraries and banks. The Nutsspaarbanken were taken over by Fortis. Fortis bank was taken over by ABN AMRO bank when Fortis went belly-up.
