HBS is an abbrevation for Hogere Burgerschool (Higher Civic School). It existed from 1863 to 1968. HBS was a school type that originally was intended to be an end education, not a preparation for the university. Later it did prepare students, first for the technical and economical universities. Over the years more and more university faculties allowed HBS students, but to the end in 1968 if you wanted to study law, theology or the arts, you had to go to a gymnasium (grammar school).
Now the building houses the Visser ’t Hooft lyceum.
