The Senate Room was full of dark portraits of old bearded professors of the olden days. This was considered old-fashioned and some people thought you could only become professor if you had a beard and wore a ruff. Now there are modern portraits, which are light and even have women on them who don't wear ruffs.

The Botanical Garden of Leiden University was founded in 1590. Originally it was rather a small garden behind the Academy Building, later it was expanded and tropical greenhouses were erected. This replica of the original garden was recreated in the 21th century.

Professor of Philosophy. He died in 1922. Recently there are attempts to cancel him and the university has removed his portrait from the Senate Chamber, but his buste remains, but it has a condescending sign next to it. Now they are no longer afraid of Bolland, certainly not now he is dead.
