Guynemer (born 1894) was a fighter ace of the First World War. In 1917 he disappeared, the Germans claimed that their pilot Kurt Wissemann shot him. Guynemer has 53 victories.

The son of Dr. med. Karl Gustav Schwabe, Ludwig Schwabe, himself a doctor too, died on the island of North Keeling. He was the ship's doctor on the Emden, a German war ship which was attacked by the Australian light cruiser Sydney, during the Battle of Cocos. Ludwig lost his foot and had a hole in his back as a result of shrapnel. He managed to get to the island, but he died from lack of water. The Augusto de Castilho was escorting the merchant ship Sao Miguel, when the São Miguel was attacked by the German submarine U-139 on October 13, 1918. The Augusto de Castilho engaged with the far superior sub, allowing the São Miguel to escape. After two hours of combat several of the Portuguese sailors were dead, including the captain Carvalho Araújo. The survivors were put on life boats by the Germans and the Augusto was sunk. De Cruyenaere was a Belgian who emigrated to Canada. He enlisted at age 16 and this picture was taken. He survived the war and he died, aged 80, in Winnipeg, Canada.
