The church is called the Bullekerk (Bull’s Church), after the miracle survival. A bull escaped and killed the farmer and his pregnant wife. The child survived (only to die within a year from an unrelated disease). The farmer and his wife were buried in this church. Inside this building there is the wooden house where Czar Peter stayed during his stay in Zaandam to learn about Dutch shipbuilding.

The Maatschappij tot Nut van ’t Algemeen (Society for Public Welfare) is a association founded in 1784, to promote individual progress, primary by means of education, but it also founded a bank, gardens, reading rooms etc.
