There are remains of a church on this spot from the 6th century. The present state dates from the 11th century, although the church was damaged in the earthquake of 1705 and the Siege of the Acropolis in 1821. It was left as a ruin, but in 1847 czar Nicholas I of Russia proposed to restore it to provide for the Russians in Athens. The church was restored (not entirely to the original) from 1850 to 1855.
