At the end of the year, oliebollen (fried dough balls) are eaten, but not everybody wants to make them themselves.

Yearly celebration of the relief of Leiden in 1574. The Spanish forces besieged Leiden for a long time, many people died of hunger and disease, but by flooding the surrounding countryside the Spanish could be driven away and the city was relieved. The Dutch forces handed out bread, cheese and herrings. Bread and herring are still handed out every year.

Also known as oliebollen. Fried dough balls. Celebration for the Relief of Leiden in 1574.

Every year at October 2 and 3 Leiden celebrates the relief from the siege by the Spaniards in 1574. Oliebollenkoning means King of the Oil Balls. Oil Balls are fried dough, usually filled with raisins.
