There has been a church here since 751. The tower and some other parts are the oldest remaining parts, dating from the 12th century.

The St. Catherine's church was built in 1453. The church fell into disrepair when the money ran out. In 1706 the building was largely demolished and the church building on the left, behind the old chapel, was rebuilt in 1708 using the original walls.
Elburg 2015 – Church tower

The original Elburg suffered from floods in the Middle Ages. In 1392–1396 a new city was built further inland. It was built using a grid system. The city became also a stronghold. The church was only moved into the new city after completion, so the church is not in the centre of the city, but close to the city wall. Elburg was a Hanseatic city, but became poorer in later years, so the city is well preserved.

The church is the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Geboortekerk. The tower dates from 1875, the church building from 1931.

There was a church on this spot from 1263 AD. The church was severely damaged in 1813–1814 when the French put up a fight in the city. The damage was so severe that a new church was built in 1851. The tower did survive however, it is from 1450.
