The canal from Leiden to Haarlem was dug in 1657. It was used for towboats until the trains took over transport in the 19th century. The towpath is visible on the left.

The canal from Leiden to Haarlem was dug in 1657. It was used by tow ships. Nowadays it is hardly used, because of the many fixed bridges. You can cycle along the old towpath. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leidsevaart
