1933 Fongers Model E 2012 Gazelle Luzern Excellent The Fongers has a three speed torpedo hub, the Gazelle has an eight speed Shimano Nexus Premium hub. Cycling on the Gazelle is much lighter, but I doubt that it will last for 80 years.

1st and 2nd gear are for extreme conditions (cycling in snow, grass, uphill) 3rd gear is the normal take-off gear. 4th gear can be skipped, can be used for normal cycling with heavy headwind. 5th gear is for normal cycling or with a headwind. 6th gear is for normal cycling 7th and 8th gear is for fast cycling, under downhill or tailwind conditions.
