Egmont was executed together with Philip de Montmorency, Count of Horn for heresy. Their executions sparked the uprising of the Netherlands against the Spanish king.

The Old Tower Ruin. Now a cemetery. First mention of a chapel on this spot dates from 1063. The church was torn down in 1573 to prevent the Spaniards from using it as a stronghold in the Siege of Leiden.
