It is not clear where the name comes from, dulle bakker means crazy baker, but in the 16th century the alley was called dullemakersteeg, maybe the alley alluded to people who made dollen, rowing pins and the name was changed over the years.

The Relief of Leiden is celebrated on October 3, but on the night before bands are playing and beer flows. Per tradition hotchpotch is eaten on that night, while herring and white bread is eaten on October 3.

It is not exactly sure how the alley got its name. Dullebakker means mad baker, but in the olden days it was called Dullemakersteeg, perhaps named after a maker of dollen (thole in English), but there are no good sources for that opinion.
