Possibly named after the engineer and physicist Nicolas Léonard Sadi Carnot (1796–1832). He theorised about a idealised heat engine, now called the Carnot engine of Carnot cycle. He proved that the maximum efficiency of heat engine depended on temperature difference and not on the type of working fluid.
