Traffic control used to be only in the hands of the police, but as police forces are doing more important stuff and because the police is far too expensive to control traffic, a new job of verkeersregelaar (traffic controller) has been created. They are used at temporary closing down of roads or at these kind of events. They are protected by the law and you are obliged to follow their directions. It is not a job without danger: some verkeersregelaars were injured or killed by people who didn't like to be told what to do.
