On a 1952 Daimler DB18 Special Sports Drop Head Coupe. It worked very simple, the gear was selected by moving the handle in the desired position and when the shift was needed, the shift pedal was pressed. R is reverse, N is neutral, 1 and 2 is first and second gear, T is top gear and O is overdrive. The fluid coupling meant that no difficult (double) clutching was needed.

The diesel engines used in trucks usually have a limited rpm range. In order to drive at different speeds and with heavy loads, you need a lot of gears. In the olden days this was achieved by using two gearboxes and the driver had to operate two gear levers. The Fuller Roadranger had all the gears in one transmission and a lever on the gear lever was used to operate the different ranges. LOW stands for low range, DIR for direct and OD is for overdrive. It was still hard work for the driver, in worst case 18 gears with a non-synchronised gearbox, so a lot of double-clutching to boot.
