The oldest part of the building dates from 1370. It was built on the spot of a castle of the count of Holland which burnt down. The façade is 17th century, designed by Lieven de Key. The tower is from 1913, although there was a tower there previously from 1468 to 1772.

Meat market. The building dates from 1602–1603. Designed by Lieven de Key, also the architect of the City Hall of Leiden. A prime example of Renaissance building in the Netherlands.
