The canal nearby was dredged but the water in the canal is also used by the power station for cooling: 12,000 cubic meters every hour is dumped in the canal by the station. The combination of dredging and the cooling water meant that the entire canal system of Leiden was contaminated with poisonous substances in the mud. The cooling water had to be diverted by means of a pipe.
