Where the old city defensive works were. In more recent history the area was used by the city gasworks and the city garbage incineration plant. The ground has been cleaned recently, now the gardeners have to make it a pretty park again. The water is the moat of Leiden, the street across the water is called the Maresingel.

The canal nearby was dredged but the water in the canal is also used by the power station for cooling: 12,000 cubic meters every hour is dumped in the canal by the station. The combination of dredging and the cooling water meant that the entire canal system of Leiden was contaminated with poisonous substances in the mud. The cooling water had to be diverted by means of a pipe.
