Traditionally hutspot (mashed potatoes with carrot and onions) and klapstuk (brisket) is eaten on eve before October 3. On October 2, 1574 a pot of hotchpotch was discovered on an abandoned Spanish position.

The pot was found on the eve of the relief of the city on October 2, 1574 and it contained hotchpotch. Till this day hotchpotch (containing onions, carrots and potatoes with meat) is eaten on October 2.

Traditional food on October 2 and/or October 3. The story is that a pot of stew was left behind by the Spanish forces and it was discovered and much appreciated by the starving people of Leiden. Today it consists of carrot, onions and mashed potatoes, together with meat and gravy. During the Spanish siege there were no potatoes.

The Relief of Leiden is celebrated on October 3, but on the night before bands are playing and beer flows. Per tradition hotchpotch is eaten on that night, while herring and white bread is eaten on October 3.
