A luohan (arhat in Sanskrit) is a holy monk striving to attain Buddhahood through meditation. In Chinese temples, luohans are usually found in groups of sixteen or eighteen. This particular clay sculpture comes from a famous group discovered in a cave near Yixian in 1912. At least seven of this group have been preserved in various museums in Europe and North America. Dates from the 11th century, Liao dynasty, Yixian, Hebei province.

Puxian is the bodhisattva of universal wisdom and a steady companion of Guanyin. The diety, dressed in a richly embroidered robe embellished with sumptuous chainwork, sits in Western fashion, legs pendant, on an elephant mount (no longer extant). Dates from 15th century, Ming dynasty, Yongji, Shanxi province.

The Museum Volkenkunde (National Museum of Ethnology) has an exhibition about Buddha .

He resides in the Western Pure Land, not so much a real place but rather a state of mind in which we are reborn, freed from the suffering in this world. He has the hands folded in meditation, the dhyane mudra. From the inscription on the base, we know that the statue was consecrated on the 15th day of the 6th month of Shōtoku 6, 1716.” From the sign in the museum.

He has the hands folded in meditation, the dhyana mudra. Yakushi Nyorai is not regarded as belonging to the highest ranking Buddha’s.
