The governor of the city of Haarlem during the siege by the Spanish forces in 1572–1573. The city had to surrender and Ripperda was beheaded. The Spanish murdered a further 12,000 inhabitants.

The Ripperda barracks were built for the cavalery in 1882. Now it is renovated and it is to become a housing/business estate. The city surrendered after seven months because of lack of food. Ripperda was murdered by the Spaniards on July 16, 1573.
